“Ever since buying a digital camera,
I can only think of the positives ….
There aren’t any negatives”
“We are formed by little scraps of wisdom.”
2017 I spent Christmas in Kraków and on the of my departure I visit this amazing and awesome exhibition.
All the cars are made in full size and made from small scrap metal parts, like nuts, screws and gears.
“Scrap doesn’t come for free, we pay someone to make it.”
W. Edwards Deming
The exhibition was held at Museum of Municipal Engineering, (also called MIM) that is located in the old tram depot – there is a whole area of different museums and exhibitions.
“Creativity takes courage”
The idea of the project was invented by Mariusz “Jose” Olejnik at the scrap yard “By the tank” in Pruszków, where the first sculpture.
“There are three things extremely hard: steel,
a diamond, and to know one’s self.”
The Gallery of Steel Figures is the first place in the world where steel sculptures are made of elements from the recycling of scrap metal.
They started with a table with a glass top, made on the basis of a V8 engine. Today, our collection has 600 figures that can be admired in Poland and Europe.
And this is just the beginning! Each figure requires 1 to 8 months of work, while car sculptures require the longest time – during their creation, 4 craftsmen work up to 7,000 man-hours.
“Art enables us to find ourselves
and lose ourselves at the same time.”
The supercars on the show are: Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and Koenigsegg plus there were some trucks from the Disney movies.
“We should preserve every scrap of biodiversity as priceless
while we learn to use it and come to understand
what it means to humanity.”
E. O. Wilson
At the same time, all figures are exclusively hand-made: they do not use castings or heavy machinery.
Although it sounds unbelievable, their basic tools are simply a welding machine, a burner, a hammer and a trimmer. Thanks to this, each of their works is literally unique.
