tuesday photo challenge – animals

Animals … and my first thought went straight to the soul of Istanbul, their cats and kittens. Istanbul wouldn’t be the same without their alley cats. The Istanbul people and their cats are one.

In Istanbul, the cat is the King!

Hundreds of thousands of cats have roamed the metropolis of Istanbul freely for thousands of years, wandering in and out of people’s lives, impacting them in ways only an animal who lives between the worlds of the wild and the tamed can.

Turkish film director Ceyda Torun has made an awarding winning documentary in about 7 of the cities cat, Kedi.

The most wonderful film. A profile of an ancient city and its unique people, seen through the eyes of the most mysterious and beloved animal humans have ever known, the Cat.

Istanbul is one of my absolute favourite destinations, have visited 6 times in total so fare and going back for more in October if COVID-19 allows me – so I have met a lot of their four-legged characters.

and company only when they want it.”

  1. I remember Greece as being much the same, wherever you went there were lots and lots of cats. Sometimes ignoring you and sometimes twining around your legs.

    • Yes, many years since I was in Greece … but it was the same thing. But I think that in Istanbul the cats are more cared for by the people. There is mutual respect between the cat and the humans.

    • Joseph, I totally agree … I had 2 cats, Whiskey & Zoda … black and grey apricot tabby, but I have always wanted a ginger cat (one day), a Garfield. All the ginger cats .. I met along one street in Istanbul, maybe they are all family some how. Thanks for the visit!

      • We have one here. He is a one person cat. He has chosen my daughter as his special someone. The rest of us hardly exist. It is rather funny when she goes on vacation and we are left to care for him. It is a crap shoot who he will choose to love.

      • I think all cats are one-person pet. Whiskey he just moved in with me against my will, he didn’t want to leave … but he didn’t really care for me. He did it just to annoy me .. my partner became his special one. But he didn’t like “people girls” at all. Zoda on the other hand that I got a couple of years later became mine and he didn’t like that at all. I dearly loved them both and I still miss them. As you say .. cats are such strong personalities and you have to accept them for what they are.
