lens-artists challenge # 85- treasure hunt

Just back from a fantastic week on the French Riviera … in Nice!!! Which is full of treasures.

One of the treasures is the “La chaise bleue” (the blue chairs) that has long been considered the symbol of Nice.

But the real treasure is to be found the last two weeks in February when Nice has it’s yearly Carnaval de  Nice!!!!

That goes back to 1873 when Andriot Saetone of Nice took the initiative of founding the “Committee of Festivities”, which, under the patronage of the municipality, was responsible for organizing and extending the festivities. Parades of floats, paying tribunes, a structured scenario … appeared. On February 23, 1873, Carnival 1st entered the city

This the second year in a row that I visit Nice just for the carnival  – for me it has it all … a true treasure. This year we only manage to enjoy the main parade … the flower parade (Bataille de Fleurs) was cancelled because of the strong wind … and the last 2 parades for 2020 was cancelled because of the health risk regarding the coronavirus.

But the atmosphere was electric and the weather was fantastic … for main Carnival Parade is made up of 18 floats designed on the year’s theme and other figurines in a colourful parade with dazzling colours, with the participation of street theatre and music groups from all over the world.

“Parada Nissarda” happens only once during the 2 weeks and we were there.

2020 carnival theme was “Roi de la Mode” – King of Fashion! Floats decorated on a fashion theme will parade to the rhythm of street art and musical bands from all around the world in a colourful and festive atmosphere.

The 136th Nice Carnival on the theme “King of Fashion”, the King and Queen and their subjects in the extravagant parades of floats, grosses têtes (giant puppet heads) and flowers.

One thing is for sure! I will be back for more treasures.
