a new year

…. and I hope that will we get things a little better this year, but I wouldn’t count on it. But we have the chance NOW!!!! I hope that 2018 will touch us and the world gently – and that we treat each other, ourselves and the world gently too.

Had a very quiet New Year’s Eve together with my friend Bärbel, had a couple of drinks … a glass wine with our dinner: Avocado mousse with Parma Ham followed by Orange Fish Soup, no dessert. Bärbel isn’t a dessert person and I have my big bowl of ice cream together with the fireworks.

Fireworks may be history next year because they are talking about banning them for next New Year … because in Sweden anyone over 18 years of age can buy fireworks. And they start firing them days before New Year and many go off in a dangerous way. Loads of accidents on New Year’s Eve a. Not even public fireworks will be shown, they are talking about laser shows instead.

Children, pets, animals, birds, elderly and we have so many immigrants that come from war zones .. and the fireworks are more scary for some than they are a pleasure.

I love fireworks, but I also think it’s an insane amount of money that goes up in smoke.  It costs £1.8m and lasts just 11 minutes for London’s increasingly famous New Year’s Eve fireworks display – which I love to watch and done for over 25 years now. Those days I have to use Youtube. Sydney’s display cost £3.79m and Dubai’s £4,4m.

New Year’s Day … means champagne and the New Year’s Concert from Vienna. Normally I enjoy my yearly pancake brunch while watching the concert, but this year we waited with the pancakes until afterward.

The Vienna Philharmonic and ORF always provide a stunning show … this year they were conducted by Riccardo Muti (1941) – one of my favorite conductors. He holds two music directorships: the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Giovanile Luigi Cherubini. He is also a very handsome man.

This concert is now broadcast to over 95 countries around the world. The first concert was held on 31 December 1939; 78 years ago – can find any details about what year it was firts broadcasted by television

So 2018 is now for us all a book with 362 blank pages … I hope we will able to fill most of them with happy memories, experiences, and events. I’m sure there will be tough and rough days, with sorrow, loss, and disappear too.

I have already filled some of my pages already with travel … but there so many more pages left to fill.

  1. Happy New Year, Vivi! 🙂 🙂 Mine was a little different this year. We were invited to stay with my Polish cousins in Norfolk, and I persuaded Mick to go. It was lovely! A dance at the Parish hall with too much food, and vodka, of course. Such nice people! I’ve never kissed so many people at midnight 🙂 And then fireworks on the pier at Cromer on New Year’s Day. Usually I watch the London ones live but we watched them on YouTube next day too. Crazy money, isn’t it? I do love them though. Hope the year is kind too you, hon. Where is the next adventure?

    • Wow, I wouldn’t mind to be on a New Year’s party like yours.
I never watched London’s firework alive … to much people and too long waiting at the riverbank. Have to be there hours before. Always watched on BBC direct. Spectacular show, but I feel a bit guilty about enjoying seeing all that money go up in smoked.
Next adventure is Belfast, Stranraer and Dublin. Take off 28.01. Happy New Year to you and your boys!!!!

      • I know- it’s crazy money! 😦 That’s the day after we go to the Algarve again. I thought you were due a visit to Belfast. Serious flooding problems in some parts. It’s been nightmare weather for some poor folks.
