a kinky sunday evening

malmo-opera-malmopera-seYesterday I enjoyed my friend, Iris company … and a fantastic musical, Kinky Boots … absolute brilliant on Malmö Opera House. We also had some food before the show at the Opera’s Grill Restaurant.

I didn’t take my camera with me … because no photo or sound uptake is allowed. My first visit to the Malmö Opera House and I was pleasant surprised … very with very comfortable seats and with stage lower than all seating plus they showed all lines and lyrics on a screen. kinkyboots-bromollabuss-se

Kinky Boots is a Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein. Based on the 2005 British film Kinky Boots by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth, which was inspired by true events, the musical tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits a shoe factory from his father. To save the business, Charlie forms an unlikely partnership with cabaret performer and drag queen, Lola. With Lola’s help, Charlie develops a plan to produce a line of high-heeled boots for men. In the process, he and Lola discover that they are not so different after all.

Having been less well received by theatre critics and at the box-office, initially, than another 2013 Broadway production, Matilda the Musical, Kinky Boots entered the 2013 awards season as an underdog. However, less than a month after opening, Kinky Boots surpassed this rival with audiences in weekly box office gross and later enjoyed a post-Tony boost in advance sales.

The production earned a season-high 13 nominations and 6 Tony wins, including Best Musical and Best Score for Lauper in her first outing as a Broadway songwriter, making her the first woman to win alone in that category. The musical’s cast album premiered at number one on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart and number fifty-one on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2016, it won three Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.

The real-life shoe factory was WJ Brookes that was founded in 1898 and Steve Pateman joined his father Richard there in 1979. It was a period of turmoil as in the second half of the 20th century inferior but cheaper imports from the Far East decimated the British shoemaking industry. Northamptonshire has been the heartland of British shoemaking since medieval times.

They invested £12,000 in a machine to put 4½in heels on boots and started to make in red or black leather or PVC, in male sizes. WJ Brookes closed down in 2000 after competitors soon caught on they faced with the old problem of cheap foreign imports, plus blatant copies of his boots. The same problem caught up with them.

One of the best musicals I have seen for a good while and funny … brilliant music and in Malmö with a fantastic cast – a musical that had a very deep message … about that we have to accept each other for what we are and to accept how we are too. At Malmö Opera House the fantastic costumes made by Marcus Olson and UK Choreographer Drew McOnie is behind all the great steps.

A musical I really recommend if it ever comes to your city!!!! It’s a feel good music, that against all odds and bad criticism made it to the top .. and became one of the best.
