in with locals and tourist – madrid

madrid-night-light…. so I’m back with more great food experiences from our 5 nights in Madrid. Food … food … food.

On my birthday my friend Anna Liisa … took care of the damage, at SKY! For the only time was I totally lost when it was about finding the restaurant, I blame the Google map. *smile It would have taken about 8 min to reach it by foot. It took 15 min.

Tucked away in a small one-way passage of a side street to Grad Via and in a basement … a well-hidden gem that was worth the detour. We didn’t really mind because it was our first time at Gran Via. Loads of light, neon and people. And it was a very warm evening. midnight-temp

It was the evening of the Spanish bicycle race La Vuelta a España finishing, so there was no traffic on most of Gran Via, the major street in Madrid. Lovely!!!! Because the traffic is mad … noticed that the next day when we went shopping.

The reviews are fantastic and they lived up to it … but didn’t have many guests. Only 3 tables in total and we were first, and again the only tourists.

A nice young lady served us .. they used a tablet as menu and they only have one, at least when we were there – so if Anna Liisa had been able to read the menu???!!!sky-cava

Because of my birthday we had one glass of Cava, Spanish “champagne” (which I like very much) before dinner.

We had a small chef’s surprise on the house … a cold tomato soup, superb!!!!!

My choice for the evening was;
Millefeuille with Goat Cheese and Tomato
Skewers of Tuna Caramelized Potatoes and Peppers
Vulcano Chocolate with Caramel Filling

When I received my starter I couldn’t believe it was a starter very similar to a starter I put on our menu for about 15 years ago, but we called Tomato and Goat cheese stack with marinade red onion and watercress. But their goat cheese was far superior to ours,  so smooth  … nearly as creme cheese. And I love that they had put roasted walnuts and pine nuts in with roasted onion bits on top. Love it. Nearly so good as ours.

My main … what can I say … two skewers with Ahi tuna – I JUST love Tuna … can’t get freshly caught here in Scandinavian. Can get fresh, but it arrives into the fishmongers’ vacuum packed. So it was an easy choice for me when there was no lamb on the menu. Again a fantastic dish. Big pieces of tuna on the skewers too.

I’m a pudding girl .. and a dinner without a sweet grand finale isn’t right for me. The Vulcano was a chocolate fondant filled with caramel instead and served with fresh berries. Great finished on a great meal.sky-entrance

A glass of champagne, wine … mineral water and cappuccino each and Anna Liisa paid 72€ with the 10% tip. I think it was well worth the money spent on me.

The last evening we went to the Brazilian concept restaurant off Calle del  Mayor. A big restaurant.

What I understand is this a concept that can be found in most major Spanish cities and it’s good value and great meats. We sat under the open sky – half the restaurant was covered and a half was fresco, but could be quickly cover if it should rain. street-sign-30

For some reason, I didn’t take Oscar out of my brand new Spanish handbag, so I have to use images from Google.

Fries, rice, and black beans so much as you want. And you can eat so much meat you want too. The chef’s come to your table with big skewers from the grill and they cut so much meat you want and how many times you want.

Surprisingly the restaurant manager didn’t speak that good English and when we were there it all guests were tourists. So we never got our Sangrias, but we survived. We got our glasses of red wine, that was excellent .. and mineral waters.

The meats were FAB, so moist .. and tender; beef, pork, chicken, sausages and grilled vegetables was served by the chefs. No lamb!!!!!

What I understand is there normally a big side order buffet to choose from instead of the side orders we got served to the table.

The only downfall was that the chef’s rushed the serving .. they came constantly over to the tables with more and more. We had to tell them to give us a break. When we didn’t want more table service we only turn coaster that said NO on the back.

Great tasty and filling concept. Very popular with the male guests. They had some deals with beer included too.

Our bill came to 40€ with the tip.

We decided to walk down to Plaza de Ote and Café de Oriente for our dessert, coffee, piano music and the stunning view of the Palacio Real de Madrid in its nightgown, all under the open sky. A perfect finish on 5 fantastic days.  Café de Oriente is a MUST when visiting Madrid.

Who doesn’t like Pitbull … here with the Spanish composer/singer Juan Magan & El Cata … but I don’t know if the song is about a girl that dancing through Madrid or its Madrid that make girls dancing, “Bailando Por El Mundo”

    • Dia, yes … we had – and we fell madly in love with Madrid. I always have a great time when I’m around and about. I think you should too – travel and a lot. New week hug …
