to make a difference

I published this post 2 years ago, but during breakfast this morning for some reason I thought about it and searched for it to read it again – so have I decided to post it again, because I think we all need a reminder at time. I sure do!

The original are written by “Loren Eiseley” – “The Star Thrower”.

“While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”

To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realise that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”

      • Truly a little kindness is not going to hurt anyone, instead that person will realize that since “a stranger showed kindness to me why can’t i do the same and MAKE A DIFFERENCE…” 🙂

      • You are so right … we don’t have to preform miracles. I find that kindness isn’t around as it use to be … don’t know what has happen *smile

  1. Beautiful story. But the song hit me again, I know it, so beautiful again… You took me again to the past… It was beautiful film, Jean Paul Belmondo… Thank you dear, you made my day today. Love, nia

    • My pleasure – I knew it been in a film, but I didn’t know witch one. Le Professionnel – as it says on the media player. How stupid can I be???? Have a feeling it has been in an other movie too. Have to find out. Has one of my favorite tracks for year – Ennio Morricone, have made some beautiful soundtracks. Very powerful music, but still soft.

    • Gunilla, yes it truly is … when I was walking on the beach in Skagen I was a starfish up on land and I throw it back in the ocean, I think it was all because of this story. We can save everybody – but can make a difference to few … only have to be one per day.
