music is a beautiful gift

“Norway is a small country, but if we flatten it,
it would become the largest in the world”

When I wrote about my invisible “scars” last week, i’m biting back … I chose a beautiful music cloud – If Came The Hour – I just feel that I want to introduce the song properly and the duo behind it – Norway’s beautiful gift to the rest to the world.

Composed and written by “Secret Garden” a duo with one part in Norway and the other on Ireland. The two talent musicians behind “You Rise Me Up”

Secret Garden is an award-winning Irish-Norwegian duo playing new instrumental music, also sometimes erroneously known as neo-classical music. Secret Garden features the Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and the Norwegian composer-pianist Rolf Løvland.

The duo has sold over 3 million albums and won the Eurovision Song Contest for Norway’s second time in 1995, with the composition “Nocturne”. It was the only time to date that a predominantly instrumental piece has won the Eurovision Song Contest.
“You Raise Me Up” is a song originally written by Rolf  and Fionnula, they asked Irish author and good friend, Brendan Graham to help them with the lyrics, it was released in 2001 on their album.  It was released in 2002 also as single. The original version was sung the song as a duet with Northern Irish singer Brian Kennedy and Tracey Campbell-Nation.  The Irish boy band Westlife had a huge success with their version in 2005.
The song had a greater impact in 2003 when it was sung by Josh Groban and was featured on his album “Closer” and the rest we know. “You Rise Me Up” is more often sung in US at official events than the US national anthem.

Personal I had the chance to ….  enjoy Josh Groban alive twice – first time in Glasgow and last time in Stockholm, 2 years ago – he has one of best male voice in the world in my ears. Amazing that a song from Norway – made his dreams come true.

“I Came The Hour” from their ninth album “Inside I’m Singing”, released in 2007, and sings by our Swedish favorite singer, Tommy Körberg, on the track. I wasn’t able to add his version of the song because of copyrights – I was able to add Petra Berger’s version and she has a such beautiful voice.

Petra Berger, born Petra Burger – Amstelveen in 1965 – is a Dutch classical schooled singer – with the most wonderful voice. She started to sing professional in 1987, when she won a singing contest together with her sister – they sang “I know him so well” from musical “Chess”. She is very touched by Barbra Streisand.
In October 2006, Petra asked to sing with the Italian star Andrea Bocelli during his concert at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden

“You Raise Me Up”

“When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

There is no life – no life without its hunger;
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly;
But when you come and I am filled with wonder,
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

You raise me up… To more than I can be.”

2006, “You Raise Me Up” became the first song to have sold over 76,000 copies of the score on the popular sheet music website, And Mr Hard To Please, Simon Cowell has named “You Raise Me Up” one of his favourite songs.

In 2007, the song was played at the historic opening of the Northern Ireland Assembly, when the peace offically came to Northern Ireland.

  1. I always assumed was originally made for G. Groban.
    I knew “Nocturne”, always loved that brilliant piece of music.
    I’ll the video for those who comment after me.

    • Thanks, Leo … they are such a talent musicans. And they are so big in China of all countries.
      No. Josh’s music producer came across the song by accident – somebody had sent him a box with 4 CD of their music and he played one of them in his office and – you raise me up – was on that CD – and that day Josh was in the studio that day and from there it became one of the worlds most popular songs.

  2. Love the song, LOVE Joss Groban, but I can’t imagine it’s song more then our Natl. Athem. Did you read stats on something on that? If interviewed, most men would not even know the song. Chicks like it though, Chicks like Groban too, but men don’t by and large.

    • Sandy, there is a documentary made by Irish TV – about how this song was born – that statement was done in that documentary. It doesn’t mean that every American knows the words … it means the song has been sung at big national sport events … ect. I didn’t say it has been sung instead of the national anthem. And it’s also one of the most popular songs for weddings and funerals in US.

  3. I love what you shared with us dear Viveka. Music is not only a gift for us, it is also the best language between us… Thank you so much for this beautiful gift to my day, love, nia

    • Yes, it’s a truly beautiful song – I read about it on wikipedia and there is so many artists that have made a cover of it and it has been used in commercials all over the world, but still it’s Josh’s song for most of us.
