… today did I come across a new image manipulation program as they call it themselves. “GIMP” and it’s free download. Have always wanted to be able to add a splash of color to a black and white photo – and with the programs I have – that hasn’t been possible .. photoshop is far to expensive, at least I think so.
So I downloaded the program and it wasn’t that easy to figure out how to add the splash – but on Youtube there is a couple of videos who show how to do it. This video I posted here is the one I learned by – and it’s silent …. no talking.
This is the reason why I haven’t been active on your posts today, since I return from mum this evening – have I been so busy with this new toy of mine, will catch up tomorrow.
“GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an image retouching and editing tool and is released under the GPLv3 (or later) license as free and open-source software. There are versions of GIMP tailored for most operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.” – text- en.wikipedia.org
I must say it’s very exciting and there is so much to play around with – I have only concentrated on the splash of color. I don’t know if it does photo pages yet. Read that media are comparing it with Photoshop, but as I said it’s all for free. Only back draw is the it doesn’t save the images in JPG format – but that is very easy to do manual.
So now it will take even longer time for me to publish my US and Canada photos – because now I will work with them over GIMP.
Here is one of my old pictures from Landskrona – one in full color (original photo) and the splash of color that done this evening – it took about 12 min from that I figure out how do it.
I think it came out pretty amazing – never done it before – and in less then 15 min I manage to create this. Can see I have missed some small areas, but for being the first time – I’m pleased. So now will I able do magic …. too!

I’ve had that programme for a while but never done much with it. I will have to check it out.

Well done!!! I think it looks great.
Yes, when I knew how to do it … it went like a dance. I think it look great too – and it’s for free – Photoshop is so expensive.
wow, that is awesome. let me see other things that you do with this program as u do them please!
I will … going away over the weekend – so next week I will play around with it more. I think it’s awesome too.
Well done, viveka. You’ll be amazed at what you can do with free or cheap photo-editing software. Will look forward to more of your experiments with GIMP. Regards.
Thank you – so do I …. can’t wait to play around – still I wish that I was able to do photo pages with GIMP – but I can do that with PhotoScape, so it has to stay.
You are so clever!
Not me … that is clever .. the programs and the camera. *smile Thanks anyhow.
Your blog is always full of beautiful images…now it looks like it will only get better.
Karen, thank you so much – you’re so sweet – my little camera can only manage so much and I really miss my old EOS that lays on the top shelve in my closest screaming for film.
This sounds like the perfect next software for me to try out! I’ve really enjoyed some different ones on my iphone as well, isn’t it fun to play! I really love your work on your original, but I love the original as well!! xx Smidge
I don’t have any modern phone, mine must be nearly 15 years old … otherwise I would be totally stressed out with all the new technical stuff – I want a phone that rings .. the rest I want to do on my PC * smile Gettting old and boring .. *smile – thanks for your kind words.
Great job, Viveka. So much fun too.
So many things to try! This is cool…
Yes, it’s … looking forward to try the program on my holiday pictures. Especially Chicago with all the skyscrapers.
